Wish List: FY '09 Budget Proposal Ups Physical Sciences

Science News discusses President Bush's proposed 2009 R&D; budget for various agencies. The proposed budget is similar to last year's, and analysts realistically predict that the fight over approving it will be similar as well. Overall the plan favors the physical sciences: particle physics, as well as nuclear fusion, nanotechnology, information technology, and cyber security, fare well. But they do so at the expense of biomedical research: The National Institute for Health and the Department of Agriculture are hit particularly hard. The article smartly points out that the president has little incentive to compromise, and Congress might try to wait until after the election before approving the FY 2009 budget.
